Vitalik Buterin has long been an advocate for philanthropy and the use of cryptocurrencies to help improve society. Through building an open and decentralized platform for applications, the Ethereum founder has created a way for all members of society to take control of their data, privacy and finances, removing power from corrupt organisations.
However, now Buterin has taken things a step further through an incredibly generous donation of $2.4 million in Ether to the Sens Research Foundation. SENS is an organisation founded in 2009 that conducts research to help fight age related diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimers and other degenerative diseases. In a statement, Buterin said:
I’ve been a fan of Aubrey’s work since I first read Ending Aging when I was a teenager, and I am happy to have been blessed with the opportunity to personally support SENS’s efforts. Their focus on creating solutions to the diseases of aging, one of the greatest problems facing humanity, is very much in line with my goal to positively impact the lives of millions of people around the world,”
This comes after a recent tweet where Buterin criticized the community for revelling in the seemlessly worthless digital money rather than using their new found wealth to positively impact society.
*All* crypto communities, ethereum included, should heed these words of warning. Need to differentiate between getting hundreds of billions of dollars of digital paper wealth sloshing around and actually achieving something meaningful for society. https://t.co/aNpEnBNGsA

It’s great to see one of, if not the most, respected and influential leaders in cryptocurrency speak out and make a positive impact on the world.
